... anatomical and cellular symphonies, catharsis of invisible biochemical processes, painting the micro-dimensional flows of the subtle body or imaginary geographies of hidden micro-bodies. Here, Edrens organic electronic music is enriched with new lymphs that also vaguely recall the influences of non-European music in an intimate and twilight dimension, poised between exotic ambient and cinematic suggestions. A miniaturistic description of liquid currents, labyrinthine veins, weaving streams, molecules and particles in multi-orbital dances, muscular chords, drowning bubbles, light waves; all in a confident compositional overview that is absolutely unique and fascinating.

After finalizing the conceptual 'Electronic Gamelan Music' album in 2017, i started to transform its workflow and sounds into a different format. I first performed these new ideas at the Kraak festival in March 2018 and at the AB club the following June. During the summer of 2018 i took it up to myself to record these tracks into a new album.. After the summer i put the recordings to the side and (as things go) my focus shifted towards other projects. Forward 2 years; In 2020 (during the first Covid lockdown), i did release some of these sounds (in a very preliminary form) as a digital only release. I gradually started to envision a new album focusing on the outside world, nature, our basic surroundings.. This idea eventually led me, during a 3 year search, towards my 2023 release 'Relativiteit van de Omgeving'. At the beginning of 2024 i stumbled upon my initial 2018 recordings and decided it was time to re-imagine these sounds into a new whole. Daarbuiten (dutch) translates as 'Out there / Outside'.

Music By David Edren.

Recorded in the summer of 2018 at LittleForest, Antwerp, except Nevelwoud I recorded live at Kraak Festival, March 4th 2018 (Beursschouwburg, Brussels) and Ijskristallen & Verdwenen recorded June 4th 2018 at AB Salon Brussels by Mich Leemans. Additional production & mix February-April 2024 at StSt, Kalmthout.

Most tracks were performed live during the recording process in 2018 and some tracks were actually recorded at live performances. Additional production took place between February and April 2024.

I'd like to think the album offers an organic flow of sounds/ideas and evokes a 'live feel'. I envision it as an ode to the outside world and its multifaceted reality. Its tracks hinting towards atmospheres, vibes and hidden stories.David Edren, May 2024

Antwerp synthesist David Edren describes his latest solo collection in conceptual terms: a harmony of space and time, elements and environments, perception and impermanence. Conceived in the morass of 2020, he began envisioning a widescreen suite of electronic compositions connected to the hidden rhythms of what surrounds and affects us. The 12 tracks of Relativiteit Van de Omgeving trace a chain of miniature terrariums, from misty meadows and moonlit gardens to cosmic vistas of asteroid showers. It’s music both subtle and symphonic, attuned to the sweeping planetary clockwork of water and wind, birds and insects, seeds scattered in soil forever being reborn: “skating the thin ice of ideas, like a heroic water strider.” NNF

Flow | 流れ

(2023) - available here

Proud to announce a collaborative album with H.Takahashi, featuring music recorded in 2020-2021.The union of Antwerp synthesist David Edren and Tokyo minimalist Hiroki Takahashi is a fit so natural as to feel preordained. Both traffic in subtle shades of contemplative electronics, marked by patience, space, and poetic restraint. And both have rich histories of curation and collaboration. Mutual fans of one another’s work, they began sharing stems in the latter half of 2020, which slowly blossomed into a collection of multi-hued compositions inspired by notions of connectivity and impermanence, translated for east and west: Flow | 流れ.

Flow | 流れ by David Edren & H.Takahashi

released February 10th 2023
by Aguirre Records (ZORN97)Opener “Dusk Decorum | 黄昏 礼節” maps the mood of what’s to come, elegantly pirouetting and percolating through an expanding vista of looming stars and half-light horizons. Takahashi describes Edren’s arrangements as evoking “a strange feel, something we haven't heard much of before.” The sensation is one of “in-betweenness,” a restless current whispering beneath the beauty, like seasons seen in time-lapse footage: flickering but infinite, transience turned permanent. Takahashi’s signature sculpture garden tones plot spiral patterns over which Edren cascades dazzling pointillist synthesizer coloration. The pieces veer between delicate and dilated, micro and macro, their aperture forever softly in flux.
From the oscillating orchestral lullaby of “Stalactime | 鍾乳石時計” to the sweeping, sparkling dream sequence closer, “Shift Register | シフトレジスタ,” the album achieves the elusive goal of being more than the sum of its parts. This is music of rare air, elevated and amorphous, shimmering just out of reach. Though Edren and Takahashi have yet to cohabitate the same room in person (a fact that should be rectified soon by an astute festival booker), their palettes and poise are perfectly paired, twin fragilities woven into seven radiant and regenerative vibrational states. The cover design of a beatific, beaded leaf rippling on the surface of a hidden pond aptly captures the record’s muted majesty. Takahashi’s quiet pride is justified: “We are very happy with this time-consuming and carefully crafted work.”

Spirit & Form unfolds a rippling waterfall, an oceanic wave of sequenced sound to safeguard against the drowning of a city-stressed soul. Like a spa for the brain, relaxing your meditation muscles with melodies of deep dreams and high hopes. A digitech video ad for a coconut-flavored aperitivo with ice-tickling images, new age flavors, fluorescently-lighted polygon meshes and deepdark shading.
Well, all these spirits are taking new form here; electronic exotica and slow burning ambient prepared from a deep-felt love for specific vibes and spaces. A very personal and perfectly paced soft swinging masterpiece.Spirit & Form is inspired by growing up in the 80's and 90's and all that this includes and inflicts; tv news intros and animated series, never ending ambient adventures and first person gaming, office clerk cubicles and its vestimentary code, hair highlights and glossy textiles, rompler synths and video manuals, digital high sheen and synthesized reality.
All this in perfect harmony with nature's high frequencies and its effect on mood and composure, like calmness in the eye of a storm. Spirit & Form is the brainchild of co-conspirators David Edren and Bent Von Bent, who both released solo- albums as DSR Lines and Ōgon Batto, respectively. S&F is a next step in their path of exploring various works of output. This new project breaks their initial setup of improvisation to explore a more compositional modus operandi.Spirit & Form is the result of numerous programming and production sessions between 2017 and 2019, one being a week at a reclusive residence in the outskirts of Zeelandic Flanders (next to the renowned Drowned lands of Saeftinghe) where most of the album's tracks came together.

Tea Notes

(2018/2019) - available here
Jatinder and David’s collaboration, Tea Notes, is a celebration, a meditation, on both the beverage, and the communal time shared imbibing. The coming together to partake in its ritual. Each of the six tracks represents a different infusion. The opening piece is a tribute to semi-oxidised Oolong, from China`s Wuyi Mountains, with hammered dulcimer-like glissando. Gongs shimmering, gently crashing, as if signaling a change in the weather.A calm of thin, stretched synths and Ai angels introduces Tulsi from India. The Holy Basil of Hinduism, used in the worship of Vishnu, Krishna, and Rama. A traditional herb of Ayurveda and Siddha medicine. Automated arpeggiated sequences raising a vibrating wall of hallucinatory sound. Pairing swooning strings with a racing robot heart.Ceylon is a modern twist on the classical raga. Serving to tell the story of a tea smuggled into Sri Lanka in the 19th century. Plants stolen from South West China, where the brew had been enjoyed since the days of the Shang Dynasty (1766 to 1122 BC). The contraband founding fresh industry in its new home when the indigenous coffee crops failed.Muted organ and sleepy, treated sine wave microtones describe Kava, the Polynesian fireweed root, whose extract serves as both sedative and euphoriant.Shincha are the first young leaves of the season. Picked in Southern Japan and steamed to prevent oxidization, retain their flavour and green / gold colour. Their musical counterpart finds Edren establishing an ecclesiastical drone, while Durhailay`s strings chart an ancient romantic ache. Sonic stars shine. Singing out to the infinite, the universe, before dissolving into knots of Radiophonic Workshop noise.Melodies treated with subtle sustain and delay denote Pu-Ehr, from the Yunnan province. The only truly fermented black tea - made distinctive by the action of bacteria, moulds, and yeasts. Its musical themes hovering in the vapour trails, the atmospheres, they themselves create. Spiraling, soaring, reaching for the heavens, while pretty music box glitches - tiny chimes turned in on themselves. Catching, reflecting, like light at play on fresh running water. (words: Robert Harris)

Jatinder Singh Durhailay and David Edren released Tea Notes as a cassette back in April of 2018. London-based Jatinder Singh Durhailay is a painter and student of Indian Classical music. He has trained in both Dilruba/Taus and the Hindi singing technique, Dhrupad. David Edren`s expertise lies with machines and modular synthesis. His Kosmische and New Age-Inspired electronics have featured on numerous cassettes, and compilations. These recordings appearing, since the turn of the millennium, either under his own name, or the moniker DSR Lines.

"The sounds gathered on this cassette are excercises in live polyrhytmic structures and minimal melodic music. They are in no way trying to represent or to imitate traditional gamelan music from Java or Bali. You could look at it as a mere impressionistic view through obvious inspiration. No special (micro)tunings were used on these pieces (except on the track 'Gamla Krobo'). All parts were preprogrammed on a number of polyphonic sequencer tracks and afterwards played and modulated in a live manner during the recording process. By seperately modulating each tracks' timing and thus manipulating the overall rhythmic structure of the piece, an effect, closely resembling an ensemble of live performers was archieved. Thanks for listening" released October 14, 2017Published by Social Harmony

"When Sigrid Volders & Narelle Dore asked me to make a musical mix for the presentation of their project "Earth.Rope.Pot.Plant", i immediately thought of the "Plantasia" album by Mort Garson, who is one of my favourite electronic composers. Little did i know, i soon discovered, although truly amazing, it is just one of many plant-related albums. Roger Roger, that other pioneer of electronic library music, made "De La Musique et Des Secrets Pour Enchanter vos Plantes" in 1978, a remarkable album which, like the Mort Garson album, also included a booklet with enchanting text and pictures. For me, discovering more and more, it all began to form into this greater spiral of interest. I saw the film "The Secret Life Of Plants" and this documentary called "Mind Of Plants" by Jacques Mitsch (Arte 2009). After which i immediately obtained some codariocalyx and mimosa pudica seeds; both known as the dancing- and sensitive plants respectively. I really wanted to start growing these plants myself. When the first seedlings popped up, in my head a plan began to grow. You get emotionally attached to plants, watering them at specific times and taking care of them every day; something that was new to me, really. After the codario was already grown quite a bit, i started placing a little speaker next to it and play it gentle electronic sounds. The littlest leaves would start twitching and turning right after these waves of sound would come out of the speaker. As for the mimosa pudica, it was rather obvious from the beginning this was a very sensitive being; The slightest touch or breeze would set off it's receptors, folding up it's leaves one by one and even branches collapsing towards it's roots. I was mesmerized! As an ode to these two botanical beings, i decided to make sounds which are gathered here. Enjoy." Music By David Edren
